How does Innohep work?
Innohep is a blood thinning medicine, it will make your blood coagulate slower.
This prevents and treats blood clots.
Treatment with Innohep
Innohep is given as an injection under the skin, once a day. Innohep is most often given to prevent blood clots from forming, but Innohep can also be given if you have a blood clot. Innohep prevents the blood clot from developing and ensures that no more blood clots form. The body then breaks down the blood clot.
The disposable syringes with Innohep are most often dispensed via the Thrombosis Clinic, Herlev. If you urgently need Innohep, you can contact the Assessment Unit, which can provide you with Innohep for a few days.
Patient instructions for self-injection of Innohep
- Store the syringes at room temperature - but not higher than 25 º C.
- Inject Innohep at the same time every day.
- Innohep disposable syringes contain an air bubble, which should not be pushed out before injection.
- If the air bubble is not right next to the plunger, tap the disposable syringe lightly until the air bubble is in place.
- By injecting the air bubble last - still with the needle in - the needle tip is "cleaned", which reduces the risk of Innohep being left in the insertion channel with possible burning or pain.
- Before you start the injection, it is important that you wash your hands with soap and water
- Bend the flap on the container lid all the way back and remove the syringe. Remove the protective cap over the needle without bending the needle. Do not pull back on the syringe plunger or press out the air bubble.
- Bend the orange safety device away from the grey needle cap. Remove the grey cap.
- Choose a different injection site next time. - Avoid injecting into bruises, hard skin, scar tissue, or stretch marks. - The most common injection site is the abdomen, but you can also use the thigh or the outer side of the lower back. - The injection technique is the same no matter where you choose to inject.
Side effects
All medicines can cause side effects, but not everyone experiences them. The treatment may cause a slightly increased tendency to bleed. Sores and cuts may therefore bleed for a little longer than normal. Bruising will occur more easily, and you will often see this at the injection site. It is completely harmless.
Plan
Together with your obstetrician, a plan will be drawn up for your treatment with Innohep. You will also be given a plan for when to pause Innohep in connection with the birth, when treatment can be resumed, and when you can stop taking Innohep completely. It is important to follow your doctor's plan. If you have contractions or your water breaks, do not take the next injection of Innohep, but contact the assesment unit.
Compression stockings:
Compression stockings relieve pain, discomfort and swelling in the legs. Wearing compression stockings can help prevent blood clots in conjunction with Innohep and prevent the development of late effects if you have had a blood clot in the leg (DVT). The stockings should be compression class 2 (23-32 mmHg), and worn on both legs, but removed at night.
Travel
If you are travelling abroad, it is a good idea to contact your travel insurance company in advance to inform them that you are taking blood thinners. In some cases, this may affect your travel insurance. If you are going to fly, you can obtain an accompanying letter from Pregnancy Clinic 1, confirming that you are taking Innohep and need to carry syringes on the flight.
