About the Research Unit

Who are we?

The research unit Copenhagen Unit for Research in advanced Endoscopy (CURE) is located at the Department of Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital – Herlev and Gentofte, Denmark. We conduct research in advanced endoscopy and groundbreaking technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Our research environment is centered around clinical research with a particular focus on the introduction and evaluation of new procedures and treatments within advanced endoscopy.

CURE is an internationally recognized research unit specializing in advanced endoscopic techniques and pioneering treatments, including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and minimally invasive endoscopic methods for diagnosis and therapy. In addition to endoscopic innovation, we also specialize in upper gastrointestinal cancers—particularly pancreatic cancer. We perform a wide range of highly specialized examinations and treatments and are officially recognized as an ESGE Center of Excellence for advanced endoscopy training.

Head of CURE – Peter Vilmann

Research within advanced endoscopy at the Copenhagen Unit for Research in advanced Endoscopy (CURE), Herlev Hospital, is led by Professor Peter Vilmann. Peter Vilmann is an internationally recognized pioneer in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and has been at the forefront of developing groundbreaking techniques such as EUS‑guided fine‑needle biopsy and endobronchial ultrasound‑guided transbronchial needle aspiration. He has driven clinical research and the implementation of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic methods within gastroenterology and pulmonology.

In addition, Peter Vilmann has developed new endoscopic techniques, leads extensive educational activities, and organizes international conferences. His current research aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer within a multidisciplinary research environment, with a particular focus on translational research.
