Screening for sleep disturbances in various patient populations using SSQ-CA

Sleep is essential for children's health, yet sleep disturbances are highly prevalent and often overlooked.

Children with chronic medical conditions face an especially high risk, but symptoms may remain undetected. The Sleep Screening Questionnaire – Children and Adolescents (SSQ-CA) is a validated tool for ages 6–17. It is easy to administer, child-reported, and covers 11 key sleep domains. This study will apply SSQ-CA in patients with neuromuscular diseases, brain tumors, Rett syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Primary outcomes include sleep duration, latency, awakenings, and overall sleep quality. Screening will be performed during outpatient visits, with data reported by children and parents. Results will provide insight into the prevalence and patterns of sleep-wake disturbances across conditions. Findings may guide systematic screening and early intervention in vulnerable pediatric populations.
