Our overall goal is to improve immunotherapy of cancer. Key areas of our work are exercise immuno-oncology and improving T cell functionality. ​

​​PtS Group pursues its main goal through two main research areas:

1. Immunological effects of exercise 
We and others have shown that exercise reduces incidence and increase immunological growth control of several tumor types in mice.

Thus, our group is interested in uncovering the immunological mechanisms mediated by exercise to improve efficacy of current cancer therapies. Our research is grouped in three main areas:

  1. In vitro - the role of acute and chronic stress signals on immune cell function
  2. In vivo – tumor models of exercising mice testing exercise in combination with immunotherapy
  3. Clinical studies – the effects of high-intensity exercise on the immune responses in healthy individuals (INHALE) and NSCLC patients (HI AIM), and resistance training in metastatic prostate cancer patients (HIPimmune)

2. Fitter T cells, Better Immunotherapy
T cell functionality is a key parameter in successful immunotherapy against cancer. We have recently shown that MerTK – a member of the tyrosine receptor family TAM, acts as a co-stimulatory molecule on T cells. 

We aim to unravel how MerTK impact on T cell function, and study how cancer cells may jeopardize MerTK signaling to T cells.

Our areas of interest include:
  1. The co-stimulatory role of PROS1-mediated MerTK signaling in CD8 T cells
  2. The role of MerTK in CD4 T cell function 
  3. The role of MerTK in T cell/cancer cell interactions​.
