Early prediction of type 1 diabetes and metabolomic changes in progressing disease.
(The metabolomic phenotype is sensitive to subtle modifications in e.g. lifestyle and nutrition, and accordingly changes in the metabolome will reflect both genetic and environmental factors, influencing susceptibility to developing chronic disease such as type 1 diabetes. Recent research in smaller cohorts has identified distinct cord blood metabolomic profiles in infants that developed type 1 diabetes later in life, and additionally revealed modulations of multiple serum phospholipids preceding the presence of auto antibodies in the progression towards type 1 diabetes.
The large multicentre prospective TEDDY study (The environmental determinants of diabetes in the young-stduy) will be used to further investigate metabolomic profiles in relation to seroconversion and progression to type 1 diabetes.)
