Architecture and Decoration

Herlev Hospital opened in 1976. The characteristic features of the buildings are modern, functional architecture in light concrete, glass and bronze-coloured aluminium. The 25 floors and its height of 120 metres make Herlev Hospital the tallest building in Denmark and the fourth tallest hospital in the world.

The interior décor is unique. Walls and interiors are decorated with a profusion of bold, bright colours. The colour scheme is intended to make the Hospital a nice place to be. Studies show that patients and employees alike feel inspired and cheered up by the colourful environment.

The colours were carefully planned – down to the last detail. For instance, the colours of patient rooms are determined by the points of the compass so the colours interact with daylight. In north-facing rooms, the dominant colours are shades of blue and green; in south-facing rooms, warm oranges and reds; while yellows are in east-facing and peach and apricot in west-facing rooms.
